About nandini

Nandini Jayakumar is a multifaceted individual with a distinctive journey that spans diverse fields. She is a PhD researcher at Cambridge focusing on AI in healthcare, an award-winning Indian classical dance performer and teacher, an actor and a dynamic media personality.

Nandini is pursuing a PhD at the prestigious University of Cambridge, specialising in the regulation of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare. She has been awarded several coveted scholarships, including from the Cambridge Trust, European Union and the French Government.

As a Bharatanatyam performer with 20+ years of experience in the 2000-year-old classical dance form, Nandini has been praised for her strong technique, nuanced expressions, and captivating stage presence. With over 400 performances across 30+ cities in prestigious venues, she has collaborated with music legends and explored diverse genres with international orchestras. A two-time winner and host of Indian national television JAYA TV's iconic classical dance show, previously hosted by luminaries like Padmashree Shobana, Nandini continues to push creative boundaries, with acting stints on Amazon Prime, host of Times of India shows, and upcoming projects on major platforms.

Research, Policy & Academia​

Nandini Jayakumar is a PhD researcher at the University of Cambridge, where her work focuses on the applications, governance, and regulation of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare. Her doctoral research is fully funded by the Cambridge Trust and Trinity College, Cambridge.

An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Nandini was subsequently awarded the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship by the European Commission, undertaking a joint Master's programme across four European countries. She was also awarded the Charpak Scholarship by the Government of France.

Over the years, she has worked with international organisations including the World Bank and the United Nations, and has contributed to major projects with governments, institutions, and stakeholders across Asia and Africa.

Alongside her academic research, Nandini collaborates with leading scholars, policymakers, clinicians, and technology experts on questions surrounding the responsible development and governance of AI in healthcare. Her work has been recognised through several international fellowships, including a recent fellowship on Global Health in the Age of AI organised by Yale University's Digital Ethics Center and Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Italy.

Her broader interests lie at the intersection of emerging technologies, healthcare, public policy, and global development, with a particular focus on ensuring that innovation is deployed responsibly, equitably, and for public benefit.

Bharatanatyam Dancer

Nandini Jayakumar is an award-winning Bharatanatyam dancer with 20+ years of experience. Hailed as a “Rising Star” by the press, she is recognised for her strong technique, nuanced expressions, and captivating stage presence.

Alongside her classical repertoire, Nandini has collaborated with Western classical opera, Persian-Arabic orchestras, flamenco artists, ballet dancers, and symphonic ensembles across Asia and Europe. Most recently, she performed to original compositions by Padma Bhushan Dr. L. Subramaniam with the German Philharmonic Orchestra at the Global Music Festival. 

Trained for over a decade in the Pandanallur tradition under acclaimed gurus, Nandini has delivered over 400 solo and group performances across more than 30 cities in India and internationally. Her work has been presented at leading festivals and venues including the Madras Music Academy, Mamallapuram Dance Festival, Konark Dance Festival, India Habitat Centre, Ravindra Bharathi, and IIT Madras’ Saarang, among others.

Nandini is also the Founder and Director of Kalashakthi Dance Academy, where she trains students in Bharatanatyam, choreography, performance, and theory. Her teaching extends beyond dance technique, emphasising confidence, discipline, creativity, and the pursuit of excellence across both artistic and professional life.

Acting, Television and Media

Nandini has appeared in the Amazon Prime anthology series Modern Love Chennai and has also acted in several award-winning short films.

She is the host of Indian national television JAYA TV’s acclaimed classical dance programme Thaka Dimi Thaka Jonu, previously hosted by top actresses including Padmashri Shobana. She is the only host of the programme to have been given a dedicated 30-minute improvisational performance segment. Nandini was also a two-time winner of the same competition.

She has additionally hosted major events and programmes for The Times of India, engaging audiences across cultural, educational, and public platforms.

Her performances and artistic work have been featured across leading television channels including ETV, JAYA TV, and SVBC, as well as across digital media platforms.
